Nancy Matarrita

Having lived in Pomona for over 25 years, I have come to love and appreciate the people that make up our city. All four of my children attended Alcott Elementary School, where I first met some wonderful teachers and people who cared for Pomona children. Through participating with the site council, I became aware of school issues and how some funding is used for our students. Then, at Simons Middle School and at Garey High School I continued participating on their respective site councils.

As a graduate of Claremont McKenna College with a double major in Political Science and Economics, I am keenly aware of the importance of a college education for our young people. In fact, three of my own children now attend college and are gainfully employed part-time.

Presently I work at Pomona First Baptist Church in the Global Impact Ministries office. In addition, for the past 7 years, I have taught computer classes to the public and monitor the computer lab at the Pomona Public Library. For five years, I wrote a weekly column called "Common Threads" for the Daily Bulletin where I wished residents "Happy Birthday" and focused on the positive aspects of our community.

Knowing the importance of volunteering, I tutor students from Palomares Middle and Ganesha High Schools in math and leadership skills, as well as serving as the Activities Director for Purple Hearts Ministry to abused women and children, serving as an officer for five years in the Women of the Moose Charitable Organization. In addition, I am currently serving on Board of Directors of the Inland Empire Credit Union.

An original member of the Pomona Youth and Family Master Plan Community Board, it has been my joy to work fervently to improve conditions and opportunities for our youth, leading the Active Community Empowerment Task Force in bringing community partners together at our Partnership building Workshops, by researching and promoting city ordinances and policies that increase neighborhood safety, and by cleaning up our city during Pomona Beautification Day.

A few More tidbits about me

Though limited by time and finance, I love to travel, mostly to do humanitarian work. I have traveled extensively throughout Central America - Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, in addition to a short-term mission trip to Cuba. While I did not learn Spanish as a child, I have since learned to speak, read and write Spanish enough to be understood and to understand.
